Should Autism Awareness Day be "Celebrated?"

On December 18, 2007, the UN General Assembly designated April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day. I have been divided on whether or not to "celebrate" that day. I've often asked myself, "Why should we celebrate a disorder that has destroyed people's lives? That has broken families, bankrupted them? That has caused so much physical and emotional pain?"

And, once again, my son has educated me and altered my perception ...

Today is Autism Awareness Day. Can you give me your thoughts about it?

I think that it is cool that we are recognized. Real good to be noticed by the world.

Do you think it should be celebrated? Or is it not a positive thing at all?

I think it should be celebrated. We work hard to fit in to the normal world. Everyone deserves a day.

Can you think of something cool everyone should do on Autism Awareness Day to show support?

Hope that people will teach their children that there are differences in us but we are the same.

What do you want people to be aware of on this day?

We work hard everyday all day. So if people see us struggle its because we are tired. I want people to understand our intelligence.

Door not shut
me and my thoughts.
i feel very hopeful knowing each kind soul reads my words.
my inner thoughts spilled across the page.
being vunerable like this can seem strange for some.
being vunerable makes you strong.
it makes me feel in control.
i decide what i share.
im incharge of what you know about me.
do you trust me?
